The 7th district in North Philly has the highest concentration of severe crashes in the city, reveals the Greater Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia.
The coalition and Azavea released this week an updated map highlighting major and fatal crashes in Philadelphia, and the 7th District came out on top. But there’s a twist: The map also looked into whether traffic crashes correlate to indicators of potential disadvantage (IPD) among residents.
IPD is a census map tool that looks at eight factors: Poverty, non-Hispanic minority, Hispanic, elderly, carless households, physically disabled, limited English proficiency, and female head of household with child.
According to the analysis, they did not find any significant correlations between crashes and specific IPD indicators per square mile.
But they did find that the highest concentration of crashes were in the 7th District, which just so happens to have the highest IPD score of 7 (values range from 0-8).
From 2010-2015, there have been 278 severe and fatal crashes in this North Philly area, particularly in the Fair Hill section.
The interactive map can be viewed here, and you can toggle between years, cause of crash, road conditions, and who was involved.
