Manayunk Shops Survive Sandy Unscathed

By Julie Davis

They're in one of the city's most flood-prone areas, but the boutiques of Main Street, Manayunk weathered Sandy with minimal damage. Storeowners from Manayunk's popular shopping thoroughfare—notorious for flooding at the intersection of Shurs Lane and Main Street—are reporting minimal damage.

"[Our] windows are intact; the sign is still hanging—surprisingly!" says Molly Cygan, owner of gift boutique The Little Apple. "I was there Sunday and got everything off the floor and unplugged everything."

However, Cygan—along with many other Main Street storeowners—decided to keep their businesses closed today. "I think most business are closed because employees cannot travel or power is out, which I know is affecting Art + Science Salon," adds Cygan. "Other than that, not too much drama in Manayunk, which is great!" Neighboring shops Tag Denim, Greene Street Consignment, MeadowSweet Vintage, and Latitudes and Longitudes are among the stores that remain shuttered until Wednesday.
