Stoop Gardening: Bananas Plants Grow at 10th and Christian

Think you can't have a garden without a big backyard? A resident in the Italian Market neighborhood is proving you wrong. A beautiful and strange sidewalk garden at 10th and Christian grows in a motley collection of containers.

Some of the planters have little desert scenes with sand and succulents. Some have crazy tropical plants like hibiscus and bananas. And some have...fish. Yes, fish. The fish were camera-shy so you'll have to take our word for it, but there are some crazy bright orange and white goldfish lurking in the biggest tub. Also lily pads, but we didn't see any frogs. There was, however, some authentic Philly litter: a Herr's Cheese Curls bag.

We don't know about you, but we're inspired. Next spring, we expect to see all of you raising fish and tropical flowers among the litter on your front stoops. Start planning now.
