Two of yesterday's commenters on this week's Cornerspotter ("guest" and serlingrod) were absolutely right: The intersection is a very busy corner of 19th and Market—the southeast corner, in particular. It was once home to a newsstand but is now more hospitable to honor boxes and BigBelly trash cans (also known as the most annoying and filthy trash "receptacles" in the entire world). The photo was taken by Francis Balionis in 1952 and comes from the collection of the city's Department of Records. Balionis took many photos for the city. He passed away in 2001.
