Congratulations to Curbed commenter dmiller! You got the answer to this very difficult Cornerspotter challenge, which stymied readers until we provided an extra hint. The intersection is indeed Thompson and Hutchinson, between Ninth and 10th and quite close to Girard Avenue.
The photos here are two Google views of what this area looked like in 2009 (the street-level view) and 2012 (the aerial shot). Quite different from what was clearly a healthy business district when the original photo was taken in 1918, though that large building remains. Perhaps the other businesses lost foot traffic when the street was turned into a giant hole?
Thanks for playing, everyone. And as always, if you have photos you'd like to see featured as Cornerspotter challenges, send them to philly@curbed.com.
