Though the global picture can sometimes look bleak, Philadelphia does a pretty amazing job of creating green space. The Community Design Collaborative reports that three projects they were involved in have received funding: the Friends of Weccacoe Playground, the Friends of Schuylkill River Park and the George W. Nebinger Elementary School. Weccacoe got $535,000 to update its playground into a green park with 20 trees and a rain garden. Schuylkill River Park received $110,000 to redo its courtyard entrance. And Nebinger Elementary got a total of $400,000 (from sources including the Brazilian Ministry) to overhaul the school's asphalt playground—with a rain garden, among other things.
