Memorial Day Fashion Musts: Neon, Cork, Chunky Heels

Welcome to Racked Philly, where we'll report on retail and fashion comings and goings around town. Seen a store open, close, or otherwise claim your attention? Hit the tipline, and we'll get right on it. The below post was contributed by Julie Davis.

With just one work day standing between us and the festivities of Memorial Day weekend (and the non-official start of summer), three of Philly area's leading boutiques tell us what accessories to pack for the holiday weekend, and reveal the season's biggest trends.

1) Neon. There's no denying it: The fluorescent glow of the ’90s is back in full force. But don't break your Hypercolor t-shirts out of storage just yet: Liz Burt, owner of the Old City boutique Franklin Square, advises adopting a modern take on the trend, toning it down with a "subtle palette, like a natural-colored lace dress or a plain white or heather gray tee." Handmade by the store owner, the Neon Druzy Friendship Necklace ($128, pictured above) embraces neon without going overboard. "The fluorescent yellow macramé is a nod to the campfire-side friendship bracelets of summers past," Burt tells Racked Philly. Franklin Square Boutique, 128 North Third Street. 215.238.0626

2) Cork. Kate Lawson, owner of the Main Line boutique Menagerie, says cork is the ideal neutral complement to the season's colorblocking and floral trends. Her store's pick: the versatile Amagansett Clutch ($128). "It will go with pretty much any outfit," Lawson tells Racked Philly. "Gold flecks and patent leather trim let the clutch pull double duty for night." The renewable cork material scores bonus points for being eco-friendly and sustainable. 3) Candy-colored chunky heels. "Chunky heels are back and better than ever," says ViVi G. Shoes shopgirl Gabriella Iannucci. "You could eat up the candy colors that Pour La Victoire came out with this summer," Her recommendation? Pair the label's strappy, sky-high stunners ($225-$250) with a "colored tank, a plain maxi skirt, and a cute little fedora" for an instantly chic summer ensemble.

4) Jeweled sandals. Afraid of heights? Jewel-embellished flat sandals and low wedges are a warm-weather must year after year. Iannucci digs the casual-yet-dressy vibe of Mystique's blinged-out footwear ($195-$245). Wear them with a "colorful blouse or a flowy top and white jeans, and you're set for a fun Memorial Day weekend." ViVi G. Shoes.
