Moira Johnston's Boobs Take a Walk Down South Street

New, 8 comments

It seems Moira Johnston, a New York-based activist who walks around topless to raise awareness about the legality of women not wearing shirts, visited her native Philly recently and strutted her stuff on South Street. We first noticed Johnston's Philly ties when our sister site, Racked New York, did a Q&A with her, and she said she'd bought her skirt at a boutique in Philly (a-ha!). (Oddly, she didn't want to reveal where she'd bought her shoes. Does that mean Payless?) Then Ronnie Polaneczky confirmed Johnston's Philly origins. Still, it doesn't seem like she gets to boob here a lot, so Sunday on South Street must have been an exception. Wherever she goes, though, it's news: She's been featured on Gothamist, the UK's Daily Mail, the Metro, msn.com, New York Magazine, the New York Post and Jezebel (we assume).

A Philly police officer posting on Philadelphia Speaks said the cops were instructed by higher-ups not to take photos of Johnston (seems like a no-brainer but we guess you have to explain these things sometimes) and not to arrest her. "It is legal in Philadelphia. They made a few phone calls to the Law Department and as long as she isn't inciting a riot, a female walking around topless is legal." Hear that, ladies?
