Last night was the opening celebration of Open Air, the art project by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer that converts Philadelphians' voices into searchlight activity. Residents record voice messages or use their smartphones to convey a message, and those sentiments are voted upon, Idol-style. Those messages that get the highest ratings are the ones that are broadcast as artistic bat signals from the Parkway. The project runs through October 14th, barring any other confrontations with the Audobon Society (worried about disrupting bird migration) and "dark-sky activists" (worried about light pollution).
