Well-known Philadelphia-based landscape architect Stuart Appel passed away last week; the funeral was on Sunday. Appel's firm, Wells Appel, has done a great deal of important work in the Greater Philadelphia area, including projects for Longwood Gardens; the Navy Yard; Christ Church; and on the Hunting Park Master Plan. The firm also worked on a project at the White House. In 2009, Appel was named a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects for "his commitment to teaching and mentoring" and "a body of work that reflects a profound understanding of context, culture, and natural systems." His Wells Appel partner, Joe Sikora, told us the firm is in the process of sending out a tribute. We'll have more in a few days. We offer our deepest condolences to friends and family.
