Watering troughs, once an important part of Philly's civic landscape, fell out of favor as cars took the road over from equine powered modes of transit. There are still a few around today, and the trough in front of the Firemen's Hall Museum at 147 S. 2nd is still used by the horses working in Old City today. [Eyes on the Street]
