Eakins Oval Opens Today, In Spite of Blistering Heat

At the foot of the Art Museum, The Oval, Philly's latest pop-up park space, opened to much fanfare and suffocating heat and humidity. Though the Oval may not be air conditioned, it does offer a few amenities that might tempt Philadelphians to brave the heat.

The Eakins Oval is now split up into different sections designed to imitate the feel of the beach. The park even includes misters to help park-goers cool off. There are also sand boxes, and an oversized chess board. A "boardwalk" offers a place for food truck and live musicians to set up. Parkgoers who prefer peace and quiet can head to the lawn section of the park, which is decked out with lawn chairs and paper lanterns.

The extensive schedule of free public activities going on at The Oval can be found here.
