The Metropolitan apartment building recently overhauled its gymnasium into a state-of-the-art fitness facility. Designed by Louis Jallade in 1926, it remains one of the city's finest examples of Art-Deco architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Looking to stay true to its history as a YMCA and YMCA Armed Forces Building, the renovations look to blend contemporary amenities with the classic design found throughout the building. The new digs will now be called MetroFit and feature a new basketball court/event space, workout facility and even a pet-washing station. The gym originally served as a dormitory for Navy sailors stationed at the Naval Shipyard. Now, residents will be able to take part in fitness classes and even intramural sports leagues.
