So long, Franklin Mills. Say hello to the rebranded and soon-to-be remodeled Philadelphia Mills. Simon Property Group is in the early stages of reinvigorating the sale-shoppers' paradise into a more modern shopping experience rich in customer amenities. Along with the name change, work has already begun on the exterior of the mall with new facades and landscaping. Don't let the free wifi and lounges with charging stations cloud your discount-seeking judgement — it's still all about the deals up at The Mills. Flying Kite Media notes that "roughly a dozen new retail stores and eateries, including Express Factory Outlet, will be added."
The interior renovations are expected to begin in early 2015 and seek to enliven the common areas of the mall through the installation of new flooring and skylights. A concierge service and new restrooms are also expected.
Mall renovations are quickly becoming a big thing in the area. If you remember, The Gallery has recently seen a flurry of action in order to capitalize on the building boom on Market Street. Not only will the first Century 21 outside of New York be setting up shop within the confines of old Strawbridges, Macerich Co. just invested $106.8M in a partnership with PREIT to ensure The Gallery become a focal-point on Market Street once again.
As for Franklin Philadelphia Mills, Simon Properties hopes to have the renovations completed around fall of 2015.
