20-Foot Cigarette Statue Is Coming to Beautiful Dilworth Park

New, 1 comment

UPDATE: PhillyMag reports that this has actually been postponed until 2015 due to "unforeseen scheduling conflicts."

This is happening. While it's not a permanent thing like the steaming red pile of, uh, paint, it is GlaxoSmithKline's attempt to raise awareness for smoking cessation, and also to help visitors quit smoking through their Nicorette and NicoDerm CQ products. And what better way to do that than to ditch a huge cigarette butt — taller than one of the PNB letters — inside of one of Philly's beautiful new centerpiece parks, which also recently opened a busy ice skating rink? As PhillyMag's Dan McQuade points out, "Hey, Dilworth Park wasn't cheap." We have one question, will it still be kind of lit and still smoldering?

"The event will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. And, to make this mashup of a drug company and a public park even better, Dancing with the Stars' Mark Ballas — a paid GSK spokesman — will make an appearance to encourage people to quit smoking. Sure, why not? He quit smoking a year ago."
Don't worry, we'll be sure to have the pictures for you tomorrow. · Drug Company to Put Up Giant Cigarette Butt in Dilworth Park Friday [PhillyMag]
