Well, Looky Here! Demolition at East Market Is Underway

New, 3 comments

Work to rework Market East is taking place on the daily. The East Market mega-project is starting to get underway in earnest, at least from what passersby can actually see. A reader sent us an email that shows crews demolishing the 12th St. side of the building. The official groundbreaking was held in October, with Mayor Michael Nutter to take some ceremonial (but real!) whacks at the revitalization project at the old Girard Square. Are you ready for a whole new Market East?

The East Market project is owned National Real Estate Advisors, JOSS Realty Partners LLC, Young Capital LLC and SSH Real Estate. The first phase will cost an estimated $230M and consist of a 17-story tower housing 160,000 sq. ft. of retail on the first two floors. 322 apartments will occupy the rest of the building, which will have space for 201 cars.

The abundant amount of digital signage was recently given the go-ahead and the project will look to provide a better overall street experience by chopping up the currently long, dark block in favor of some green space and promenades that lead to a retail corridor.
