W Hotel is Starting to Percolate Near 15th and Chesnut Street

New, 1 comment

There have been some recent developments at the intersection of 15th and Chestnut Street — specifically regarding the 50-story W and Element Hotel (in all its tax break glory) and its noisey-neighbor, 1515 Chestnut Street, which will be converted into 180 apartments. As for the hotel tower, it is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and will replace a surface parking located behind the Residences at the Ritz-Carlton. Crews were on the site to "test the soil," according to HughE Dillon of PhillyChitChat. They were also seen last week snapping some before shots of the surrounding area and businesses in anticipation of the construction. The plan calls for a large, below-grade parking garage and "before" pictures were taken in the event that damage was done during construction.

Quite possibly, the most interesting news is HughE Dillon's tweet regarding rumors of Jay Z opening a club nearby:

As for 1515 Chestnut, Dillon also reports of a reshuffling of the businesses. Wendy's (yes, that Wendy's) will move from their congested corner spot to a storefront on Chestnut Street — replacing Giovani's Pizza and Falafel Bar, both of which will move to 1533 Chestnut Street. While the plan calls for 180 or so apartments — including some of the city's first "mirco apartments" — the building will also include 8,000 square feet of office space and 7,500 square foot of ground floor retail.
