Department of Licenses and Inspections: Proposal Tug of War

[Photo of collapse by Bradley Maule]

The Department of Licenses and Inspections needs to be fixed, perhaps because there have been too many crumbling buildings all around us. Among those getting to the bottom of the issue: Mayor Nutter and Council President Darrell Clarke. These two individuals apparently have very different ways of going about the issue to fix the challenges faced by the department. Currently, the two proposals seem to oppose each other.

Proposal #1: Mayor Nutter wants to split the L&I in two. One department would oversee city demolition and construction. The other side would handle all other functions, such as permitting. Perhaps this will create a less unwieldy organization to manage.

Proposal #2: Council President Darrell Clarke wants to create a larger organization, called the Department of Planning and Development. This outfit would manage "licenses, inspections, enforcement, planning, and zoning."

At least there's a glimmer of confidence that these two will come together eventually. They do plan to make love (Park), not war.
