Elkins Park is full of extravagant homes, from Horace Trumbauer’s Lynnewood Hall to the 28-room Sylvan Edge Estate. But if sprawling mansions sound like just too much house, there are smaller architectural gems to consider, like Penrose Manor.
This recently listed Georgian Colonial is on the market for $525,000. Although the exact timeline isn’t clear, listing agent Scott Laughlin says that from what he could gather, Penrose Manor dates back to sometime before the 1850s, which makes it at least four decades older than the extravagant Lynnewood Hall.
The 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath home was the home of B.F. Penrose and originally boasted 50 acres of land. Today, the 4,194-square-foot property now sits on 1.15 acres and features numerous additions, including 4,000 square feet of “artistic space.”

By the looks of it, the home has been pretty well-maintained over its long history. There are a wealth of built-ins—check out that library’s periwinkle cabinetry on the first floor—and random-width hardwood floors throughout.
Some of the upgrades over the years include the home’s addition, which features the kitchen, breakfast room, and mudroom. On the second story, the master suite has an updated bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. And there’s a billiard room on the lower level of the home.
