It’s been a busy summer for the corner of Broad and Washington, which has been preparing for the grand opening of a nine story mixed-use development.
Now, nearly two years after it broke ground, the much-anticipated project is here, bringing apartments and retail to a major—but long-abandoned—corner of South Philly.
The Lincoln Square development officially opened Wednesday, with a ribbon cutting that saw Mayor Jim Kenney, council members Mark Squilla and Kenyatta Johnson, and more in attendance.
Representatives for the development also took the chance to announce two new retailers that will set up shop in the space—Insomnia Cookies and Chipotle.
“Lincoln Square is rich in retail offerings and public space that will invigorate the surrounding area as much as the community of tenants who call it home,” Michael Prifti, BLT architect and principal of the project, said ahead of the opening Wednesday.
The Lincoln Square, a $100 million, 300,000-square-foot project, broke ground in late 2016. It brings nine stories with 322 rental units on the upper floors, and retail on the ground floor to the corner of Broad and Washington. The retail includes a Target, Petsmart, Wine and Spirits, and Sprint store.
The second floor has 50,000 square feet of amenity space, including a fitness center, lounge, golf simulator room—a more common concept in new apartment constructions than you might think—and a media room. There’s also ample outdoor space with a track, fire pits, and couches.
The apartments range from studios, which can be as small as 380 square feet and which start at $1,290 per month, to three-bedroom apartments, which can reach 1,427 feet and which start at $3,235 per month.
Next door to the space, a historic rail shed—which President Abraham Lincoln’s body once passed through—has been turned into a Sprouts Grocery Store.
