Here are the worst times to leave for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is coming up and—with a weekend temperatures in the high 80s—it seems everyone is getting out of town for vacation.

But of course that means the roads will be packed this week as vacationers try to make the most of the three day weekend. In fact, according to a release from AAA, 454,000 Philly-area residents are expected to drive 50 miles or more—a 3.6 percent increase from last year.

It’s not just our city, either. Travel is hitting a record high across the country this holiday season, with 43 million people anticipated to take to the roads.

In and around Philly, the peak travel time is expected to be Thursday afternoon—likely around 4 to 6 p.m.—when most vacationers are leaving for the long weekend, and when they’ll meet regular daily commuters on the road, according to Jana Tidwell of AAA.

While not quite as busy as Thursday, Friday afternoon will see similarly high travel rates.

Though 90 percent of Philly-area travelers will be taking the roads, expect to see a bump in air travel, too. AAA says more than 33,000 Philly-area residents will fly to their vacation destinations—a 4.8 percent increase over last year.
