Community Guidelines

Welcome to Curbed!

We’re a vibrant community of people who share a passion for where we live. Here’s the place to connect with others like you: smart, invested people who care deeply about cities and neighborhoods, architecture, design, and home. Our goal is to foster conversations that are insightful, informative, and fun—but we need your help in keeping the Curbed community a thriving and safe place for all of us, so here are some guidelines for how to participate.

The Basics

  • We’re thrilled that you’re here! We want you to feel at home on Curbed.

  • Be cool and play nice. Show the kind of consideration for your fellow commenters that you’d like to be shown, and do your best to offer thoughtful and incisive feedback.

  • Respect and help the community team. It’s a small group of dedicated, caring humans working hard to make your experience here great.

How to Comment Like a Pro

To comment, sign up for an account simply by clicking into an existing comment section, or else by clicking on the person icon at the top right of the page. If you’re interested in checking out our privacy policy and Terms of Use, we got you.

We’ve got some great tools to help you keep up with all the chatter happening on Curbed. First, comments are organized into collapsable threads to make it easy to follow a conversation. If a bad comment gets deleted (see grounds for removal below, under House Rules), we’ll simply move all the good stuff below it back into the stream. You can preview your comment before you’ve posted, and if you realize you’ve made a typo, you'll have 90 seconds to edit your comment before it’s set in stone.

  • Reply: Use this to reply to a specific comment, and note that your reply will be threaded to that comment. Bonus, click "Up" to find the origin comment for a thread.

  • Recommend: We love great comments, and we know you do, too. Click "Recommend" to give the best comments a star and a green highlight.

  • Flag: Use this to report a post to our community team. Use it on spam, on personal attacks, on racist or sexist language, or anything that violates the House Rules below. Don’t use it to report stuff you disagree with or to hassle others. Our community team works really hard, so please help them help you!

  • Shortcuts: There are some really great keyboard shortcuts on comments—they're listed at the top right of the comments area.

House Rules

Even though you’re being cool and playing nice, we want you to know what behaviors will get your comment removed—and might possibly get you banned from Curbed. Note that this is not a comprehensive list, and that our community team reserves the right to remove anything we deem inappropriate.

  • Spam: Zero tolerance, of course! Whether it comes from a human or a robot, spam will be deleted. Yes, this includes self-promotion, so promoting your properties or your projects here will be treated like any other spam.

  • Personal attacks: Don't attack or insult another user or editor. It's not helpful, and it doesn't make Curbed a friendly place. This includes calling other members trolls.

  • Personal information: You may not post personal information about yourself or others. That includes addresses, whereabouts, private details, or other Internet accounts. Privacy is a top priority for all of our editors, community members, and sources.

  • Illegal activities: Posting links to illegal downloads, ways to steal service, and other nefarious activity is not OK here.

  • NSFW material: Nope, not allowed. Even images or links that could be considered borderline are not acceptable. A good rule of thumb is that anything beyond PG-13 will get you in trouble, but we reserve the right to remove any post we deem offensive. This goes for porngraphic material, vile language, gore, and generally gross stuff.

  • Racism, sexism, and other discrimination: Attacking entire classes of people is just like attacking a single person: We'll ban you for it. Supportive community members should also be aware of microaggressions.

  • Trolling: Like the ogre itself, this is a big, hairy term, but we know what trolls are, and we won't tolerate them. If you're abusing the constructive conversations here at Curbed, we will take your comments down. And yes, trolling includes taking a thread off-topic.

  • Multiple accounts and throwaway emails: We don't allow multiple accounts per user. Using a disposable email address signals to us that you might not be here for the right reasons. Further, you may not create accounts designed to impersonate another person.

  • Complaining about coverage: We cover a wide array of topics, not all of which are easy, comfortable, or reflective of your personal views. While we’re not against discussions of our coverage, plainly stated accusations of bias are usually an indication that you’re not trying to be a productive member of the community. Insightful critique, though? We’re all eyes.

  • Offensive or questionable usernames: If your username contains language or terms that could be construed as offensive, we'll put a hold on your account and start a dialogue with you, asking you to change it to something more appropriate. We'll let you suggest new usernames, but if you can't come up with something, we reserve the right to choose a new username at random in order to get you up and running on a temporary basis until we've figured out a workable solution.

  • First post ban rule: If your first post on Curbed is in violation of our community guidelines, it is clear to us that you have no interest in following the rules or being cool. The community team reserves the right to ban new members who immediately violate our guidelines. If you think this is a mistake, you can appeal the ban, and we’ll tell you at the time of the ban how to do that.

Above all, our community team works to keep conversation here respectful, engaging, helpful, and productive. If we feel a comment or forum post is harming that endeavor, we’ll take action.

Moderation

  • Isn’t this censorship? Well, no and yes. We’re trying to foster great conversation, and we will remove comments that harm that endeavor. The Curbed standard is to keep the conversation informative and respectful, and the bottom line is that the editors and community team have the final say on whether it fits within our community guidelines.

  • Questions about moderation: We're happy to have a discussion with you about it—in private. We've found from long and hard experience that public complaints about moderation just leads to people trying to "game" the system. If you have a question about moderation, hit us up on our contact form and we'll have a talk. If there's a big policy change or something we would like to say publicly about moderation, we'll update this page.

  • Helping out our community team: Our community team works very hard and has your best interests at heart. Please help them out by flagging inappropriate comments and take heed when they ask you to change your behavior. Note that most of our community team are volunteers freely dedicating their time to help make things better. They don’t speak for the site, but still deserve your gratitude.

  • Becoming a community moderator: We don’t have an application process, but instead we select from the best members of our community. If you want to be a moderator, our advice to you is to be awesome: Help users when they have questions, flag inappropriate comments with good explanations of why, help users relax when threads start to look like flamewars, and generally just show us that you're a helpful and real human being. When the time comes, we may tap you on the shoulder and ask if you're interested.

Account Alterations

If you need to disable your account or request a name change (only one name change per account), get in touch with our community team, and they can help you out.

Conclusion
