Landmarks in "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

View as Map

Oh do we have a special Throwback Thursday for you! As you know, The Grove of Park Champions was recently dedicated at The Belmont Plateau. In that post, we made the obvious reference "Summertime" from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. While watching the video, we noticed that the guys "drive slow, so everybody sees" them pass a ton of great Philadelphia landmarks. What better way to show them off than with a map? Outside of the classic cookout dance scenes, we love that Jazz and Will slowly cruised through Philly on a flatbed truck during summertime rush hour, even if it, as Jazz said, "got [them] a couple of middle fingers pointed our way," in the process. And so, crank up your speakers and travel along with two Philly legends as they tour you around Philly circa 1991.

Belmont Plateau

The hilarious split-shots, the scenic views, the verse and those amazing cookout party scenes - The Plateau makes this music video a classic.

DJ Jazzy Jeff told Biography.com: "The whole video was shot in Philly. And what we told the director is that we wanted to have a cookout and invite all our family and friends. There were very few things that were scripted in that video. We knew everyone in that video. They were either one of our friends or one of our family members."

Philadelphia Museum of Art

It shows up a few times but we're on the west side of the building just ten seconds in to this classic.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia

Boom - four buildings shine through here: The Four Seasons (front), Embassy Suites (L), Three Logan Square (M) and One Logan Square (R)

Cathedral Basilica Of SS Peter & Paul

It's basically and extension of the previous shot. Here, you have the Basilica, Sheraton Downtown and a slice of Friends Select.

Undine Barge Club

There's multiple shots of Boathouse Row as a lot of the video was shot from West River Drive. Undine Barge Club was established in 1871.

Swann Memorial Fountain

DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince head back to the parkway. It's too bad that didn't get a shot of people taking a dip in the fountain.

The Water Works Gazebo

It's quick and could be confused with Mercury Pavilion. Given that it's so close to the Schuylkill River, we're going with the glorious Gazebo.

Dimner-Beeber Middle School

Finding the building of the basketball/fire plug scene was tough to track down. We surmised that, since the rest of the video is shot at The Plat and The Parkway, that it had to be close-by. The smoke stack on Dimner-Beeber was the kicker.

2601 Parkway Condos

There's that gazebo again! Only this time, the 2601 Parkway condos are clearly visible in the background.

Sedgeley Club

You can't have multiple scenes from Bouthouse Row and not include Sedgeley Club! The anchor boathouse boasts the Turtle Rock Light. Built in 1887, it's the Schuylkill River's very own lighthouse.

Penn AC Rowing Assoc.

Even Jazz can't believe that this historic boathouse was established in 1871

The Watermark, Family Court Building

According to DJ Jazzy Jeff, "We made some people mad. That part was shot on a Friday afternoon and everyone was getting off of work. So, we were backing up traffic." What's more summertime than Center City traffic?

The Whole Shebang

The skyline view from The Plat is shown throughout the video, but it's at its absolute best during the final dance scenes, especially for the dude riding the pony. It's got everything but Two Commerce Square and the Comcast Center.
