It feels like spring is almost there in Philly: it’s bright, occasionally warm, and people are starting to spend a little more time outside.

And, if you’re eager to herald in that spring feeling, it’s worth checking out your local plant shop or nursery to see some good greenery. Learn how to prep your home and garden for spring, or just get some colorful flowers that will brighten up your living room.

Urban Jungle

Urban Jungle was founded by a Philly transplant from California who needed a new way to garden while living in the city. Today, its warehouse in East Passyunk is filled to the brim with both indoor and outdoor plants and tools, plus a super knowledgeable staff that helps promote vertical urban gardening.

Market Blooms

This plant shop is a long-time vendor at Reading Terminal Market. The blooms are cut fresh from the vendor’s farm in New Jersey, but there are imported flowers and plants, too. Come spring and summer, keep an eye out for the outdoor flower markets held on Filbert Street.

The name says it all: Plants Etc. in Fairmount has been around for nearly 40 years, led by founder Marcia Abrams. In addition to selling a variety of plants, the shop also offers floral arrangements.

Greensgrow Farms

Founded by in 1997, Greensgrow Farms in Kensington has become a neighborhood gem and the go-to place to buy plants, as well as local cheeses and planters, in the area. Have a somewhat lackluster green thumb? Greensgrow hosts a number of classes and events every month that will help you learn to make your garden grow. There’s a second location in West Philly, too (See #6).

This lovely shop is set up in an old converted warehouse, filled with seeds, succulents, and a wide array of planters. Need an extra hand? The folks at this shop can help you choose a planter, plant it for you, and then deliver it to your door.

If you can’t make it up to the Kensington location, head to Greensgrow West in West Philly. Like its Kensington counterpart, the recently re-located urban farm features an wide selection of plants and gardening tools, plus a chicken coop.

Vault + Vine

This list wouldn’t be complete without including Vault + Vine in East Falls, once known as Falls Flowers.. In addition to owner Peicha Chang’s floral arrangements, the new place has expanded plant offerings thanks to the new greenhouse, along with a cafe.

Secret Garden

The only thing secret about the Secret Garden on Ridge Avenue is its conspicuous location. But once folks find out about it, they rave about the huge selection of plants, flowers, tools, and seeds available. Come winter season, the Secret Garden offers Christmas trees—and they deliver.

Laurel Hill Gardens

This garden shop in Chestnut Hill is part of a larger landscape and design business that’s been around since 1981. At the charming garden store, there are native plants for sale, as well as organic gardening supplies, and planters. You also have the option to have a planter custom-made.
